Dear Environmental Journalist: I would like to invite you to the Monday, March 18, annual meeting for scientists affiliated with the University of California, Davis, Center for Ecological Health Research. The center was founded four years ago to study ecological issues facing Northern California and is funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. UC Davis researchers with the center study factors such as toxic substances, salinity, drought, temperature and introduced nonnative species that can stress ecosystems. The meeting will open at 9 a.m. in Freeborn Hall with a report by Dennis Rolston, center director and a UC Davis professor. David Rapport, of the University of Guelph and president of the International Society for Ecosystem Health, will give an invited address following Rolston's remarks. Topics to be discussed by faculty presenters during the daylong meeting include the center's Clear Lake, Sierra forests, Lake Tahoe and Sacramento River/Delta/San Francisco Bay projects as well as researchers' work with the agricultural ecosystem project. Faculty members presenting posters and updates on the status of their work will include Charles Goldman, professor of environmental studies; Dennis Rolston, professor of land, air and water resources; Bruce Hammock, professor of entomology; Takayuki Shibamoto, professor of environmental toxicology; Barry Wilson, professor of avian sciences; and Kate Scow; associate professor of land, air and water resources. Posters showing the highlights of work by these and other researchers affiliated with the center will be on display during the day.
