Tens of thousands of people will be coming to the University of California, Davis, on Saturday, April 19, for its annual Picnic Day, one of the largest picnics in the country.
Opening ceremonies for the daylong 84th campus open house will begin at 9:30 a.m. on the north end of the Quad, followed by a traditional parade through the campus and downtown Davis. Musical entertainment, dancing, sporting events, campus tours and animal exhibitions are the features of this year's event.
The parade will have four co-marshals representing a variety of fields and achievements: Delaine Eastin, state superintendent of education; Denis McNeil, lead tenor for the New York City opera; Ann Veneman, director of the California agriculture department; and Ken Verosub, professor of geology and former winner of the UC Davis prize for undergraduate teaching and scholarly research.
"Outstanding in its Fields" is the theme of this year's celebration. UC Davis students chose the theme to recognize the long-standing traditions of UC Davis and the Davis community, according to Nathan Paxton, Picnic Day chair.
