Kaleidoscopic scraps of polar fleece rescued from the jaws of the trash compactor become clothes and creative accessories when a UC Davis class has worked its environmentally sensitive magic. Assistant professor Janet Hethorn's Design 1 class will showcase innovative clothing and accessory designs before a panel of judges and textile recycling entrepreneur Rick Duchin today, Dec. 5, from 3:15-4:00 p.m. in Room 176, Everson Hall.
The challenge required groups of students to work fabric scraps that would otherwise have gone to landfills into their designs. They were asked to make 10 or more pieces, each with a projected retail value of $30 or less. Garbage bags full of fabric waste and table cuttings were provided by Duchin, owner and president of the recycled clothing company Garbage Collection in Oakland, Calif. He presented the challenge two weeks ago.
The judges will include several Birch Lane Elementary School children who will have heard a talk by Duchin at 1:30 p.m. at the school. He will address his concern that businesses and individuals should take more responsibility for creating innovative solutions to waste problems.
Garbage Collection manufactures high-quality children's clothing and accessories from used fabric scraps which otherwise would be discarded to landfills. Duchin believes "we must base our actions on future innovations, for future generations, not on yesterday's achievements."
