Removing Gender Bias From Teaching to Help Women Succeed in Math, Sciences

A new booklet at UC Davis aims to help identify and find solutionsfor gender-biased teaching. Called "Creating Gender Equity in YourTeaching," it contains tips and ideas originally written by Robby Henes, director of the Center for Women in Engineering, as a handout for workshops. Gender bias refers to subtle messages in classroom communication and activities that may discourage women from reaching their potential, particularly in mathematics and science. The booklet, which has been requested by a number of universities across the country, points out different ways teachers can become more effective instructors, particularly for women in their classes. A companion video featuring UC Davis drama students will be previewed June 5-7 at the national meeting of Women in Engineering Program Advocates Network in Washington, D.C.
