Renovated Bookstore Opens March 2

Books, paper, art supplies, computer equipment and apparel are slowly filling shelves with the help of staff and student employees at the newly renovated and expanded bookstore at the University of California, Davis. Expansion of the store to two levels, which began last spring, now completes the second stage in a three-phase, $8 million Memorial Union reconstruction project. The bookstore is now more than twice its original size. Expanding the store's width and renovating the basement into commercial space gives the 26,808-square-foot building a "new" look, according to Allen Lowry, project manager with the campus architects and engineers office. "The inventory of trade and reference books will be greatly expanded and customers will find the bookstore more organized, efficient and ultimately easier to use," said Tom Compton, director of Memorial Union auxiliary services at UC Davis. Compton expects the bookstore to be open for business on Monday, March 2. For the past 11 months, the bookstore temporarily set up operations in the vacated space of the old Coffee House. The completion of the bookstore marks the beginning of the third and final phase of the construction project, funded by a referendum passed by UC Davis students in 1987 that increased their Memorial Union fee. The first phase, completed last spring, included construction of the new Coffee House, and the third phase, to be completed in August, will add space to the lounge area of the MU for student comfort. In addition, some of the retail businesses currently housed in the Freeborn Hall basement will be relocated to the area formally occupied by the old Coffee House. The landscape portions on the south and east sides of the MU will also receive a face-lift.
