Linda Van Hoogmoed, an equine surgeon and llama enthusiast, works with the UC Davis Veterinary School llama herd. Llamas are of particular interest to the equine surgeons, who say there are many similarities between horses and the ruminant pack animals from South America, which are more closely related to camels.
Because llamas have become popular pets in California, the veterinary school maintains a teaching herd for students. In fact, the students have created their own llama club.
