-- For their efforts to improve seafood safety, Robert Price, UC Davis extension specialist for seafood products in the Department of Food Science and Technology, and the National Seafood Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points Alliance received a 1999 Secretary of Agriculture's Group Honor Award for Public Service. Price is a member of the alliance's steering committee. Widely publicized outbreaks of food-borne illness have put the safety of the nation's food supply under the microscope and triggered an overhaul of its food inspection system. Seafood was the first food commodity group to be brought under new standards. Processors engaged in interstate commerce of seafood were able to meet a December 1997 deadline, thanks to the work of the seafood alliance.
