Robot Rugby Player Shows Its Stuff

UC Davis undergraduate engineering students will demonstrate a rugby-playing "robot" 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 28, on campus before they travel to Japan as the only U.S. entrants in a nationally televised robotic competition. Eighteen university teams will compete in Robocon' 95, Sept. 3, in Osaka. The Japanese public broadcasting station NHK is sponsoring the event, which integrates and applies the knowledge of mechanical and electrical engineering and computer science students. Each participating robotic vehicle must navigate an obstacle-ridden course without human help, place its rugby ball on a tee and kick the ball between a goal post. After the obstacle course, the student inside at the controls must direct the device to collect and kick 17 rugby balls through one of three goal posts.
