Roe vs. Wade debated on 25th anniversary

Roe vs. Wade and subsequent rulings related to the U.S. Supreme Court's landmark decision on abortion will be debated at UC Davis Wednesday, Jan. 28. A news conference is being arranged. Sarah Weddington, who argued the winning side of Roe vs. Wade, will debate Phyllis Schlafly of the Eagle Forum, an organization advocating conservative and pro-family policies. "Roe vs. Wade Revisited: The 25th Anniversary Debate" will begin at 8 p.m. in Freeborn Hall. As a Texas legislator, Weddington helped to reform rape statutes, to pass an equal credit bill for women and to prevent passage of anti-abortion legislation. Later, as an assistant to President Carter, she led White House efforts to extend the ratification period for the Equal Rights Amendment. Author of "A Question of Choice," Weddington now teaches at the University of Texas at Austin. Author of "A Choice Not an Echo" and 15 other books, Schlafly is a leading critic of the feminist movement. Also a lawyer and public commentator, she has been elected to eight Republican National Conventions.
