Roller Hockey Fad Hits UC Davis

The fastest growing recreational and competitive sport in America is in-line skating, according to Gary Colberg, director of intramural sports at UC Davis. He anticipates that 4,000 to 5,000 students at UC Davis will be using the new In-line Skate Center that was recently completed on campus. It is the only outdoor roller hockey facility on a college campus in the United States that meets official National Hockey League regulations, says Colberg. The $145,000 center across the street from Recreation Hall has scoreboards, bleachers, special all-weather floor and dasher boards. In-line skating has been popular among UC Davis students for transportation and leisurely recreation, but for many students it was time to make exercise more stimulating. Students, faculty and staff have created a 21-team roller hockey association that will get under way next month. The facility will be used for teaching, training and competition.
