The latest fad to hit the UC Davis campus is roller hockey. In-line skating has been popular among UC Davis students for transportation and leisurely recreation but for many students it was time to make exercise more stimulating. Students, faculty and staff have recently created a 21-team roller hockey association. The campus is funding the building of a $145,000 offical hockey rink across the street from Recreation Hall that will have scoreboards, bleachers, all-weather special floor and dasher boards, according to Gary Colberg, director of the campus intramural sports clubs. "I anticipate that by next fall the rink will be in use from 8 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week," says Colberg. The facility, expected to be completed by July, will also be used for arena soccer. "We believe that UC Davis will have the only outdoor roller hockey facility in California that meets official National Hockey League regulations," says Colberg. "At the rate the sport is going, roller hockey rinks may outnumber baseball fields."
