What: In the spirit of the Olympics, about 550 children will compete in sports and academic events under the flags of California State University, Sacramento, and the University of California, Davis. They are participants in the National Youth Sports programs at the two campuses. This year's event grew out of the circumstance that the CSU-Sacramento program had to vacate facilities for the U.S. Olympic track and field trials being held on that campus.

Background: Individually, UC Davis and CSU-Sacramento offer sessions of the National Youth Sports Program. About 400 children from lower-income families in Yolo and Solano counties participate in the UC Davis program, weekdays from June 26 through July 28. The children play sports, get hands-on experience with science and explore career opportunities. The program also features math instruction and a component on drug and alcohol awareness.
The CSU-Sacramento program, which began June 12 and concludes with the mock Olympics, serves about 250 children from lower-income families in Sacramento County.
The National Collegiate Athletic Association is a co-sponsor of both programs.
