Sacramento's Co-Madres Artistas announced their entry as a Chicana/Latina artist collective six years ago and in doing so, created a place of respect and recognition for themselves and their artwork and for many other Chicana/Latina women.
As a collective, the artists' stated mission is to "nurture the arts within the Sacramento Valley's Chicano/Latino/Indigenous community." The five women artists in the exhibit bring together collectively more than 100 years of painting, drawing, printmaking and photography. Their artistic careers are also balanced with their dedication to their families and community. As individuals and friends they have contributed to the development of local Chicano/Latino community organizations such as the Brown Berets, La Raza/Galeria Posada, the United Farm Workers and the Royal Chicano Air Force.
The Co-Madres Artistas will install a group "altar" dedicated to recognized and unrecognized Chicana/Latina artists. A monograph containing a group interview with the artists with museum curator Theresa Harlan and black and white reproductions of works in the exhibition will be available; donations are encouraged to defray publication costs.
The exhibition is supported by the Native American Studies Department, California Arts Council's Multicultural Entry Grant, and the UC Davis Women's Resources and Research Center and the Cross-Cultural Center. The exhibit and reception are open and free to the public.
The C.N. Gorman Museum is part of the Native American studies department and is dedicated to Native American artists and diverse artists whose works address cultural, social and political issues of the Americas.
