Safety of farm kids is new project's aim

Children who grow up on the farm have an exciting yet dangerous back yard. Each year thousands are severely injured and hundreds more are killed on farms and ranches across the United States. To address the special safety needs of California's diverse ethnic populations, the Agricultural Health and Safety Center at UC Davis is teaming up with a national organization called Farm Safety 4 Just Kids. "Children of migrant farm workers in California have a different set of health and safety problems than the farmers' children in the Midwest," notes Martha Stiles, a researcher with the center. Educational materials prepared and distributed by the project stress that children should not be given adult jobs, proper training with farm equipment should be provided, safe play areas should be established, and resources should be pooled for proper child care.
