Dan Schnur, director of communications for U.S. Sen. John McCain's presidential bid, will be one of the featured speakers during the Political Campaign Management Institute at UC Davis Friday, July 14, to Sunday, July 16.
The 16th annual institute will draw some 60 political candidates and campaign workers -- from volunteers to managers -- to learn from a faculty of campaign veterans, political and fund-raising consultants, and members of the media.
Schnur, who also served as press secretary to former California Gov. Pete Wilson, will offer his perspective on California elections in the 21st century at a luncheon speech at 11:45 a.m. Saturday. Among the other speakers will be Kim Alexander, president of the California Voter Foundation, on integrating the Internet into a campaign's communications strategy at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Eleven other sessions will explore topics ranging from grassroots organizing and precinct analysis to the crafting of effective campaign messages.
Ed Costantini, professor emeritus of political science at UC Davis and adviser to the institute, says California's new term limits -- six years in the Assembly and eight years in the Senate -- are opening up new opportunities for political hopefuls. He also says this fall's statewide election will be crucial because the winners will help determine how electoral districts are redrawn based on the recent census.
All institute activities will take place at the Da Vinci Building, 1632 Da Vinci Court, Davis. To register, contact University Extension at (800) 752-0881 or visit http://www.universityextension.ucdavis.edu/pcm.
