School Motivation

Nearly 60 secondary-school students finish their six-week stint today at UC Davis "trying out college" through the campus's 32-year-old Upward Bound Program. The students have been taking on-campus high-school and Summer Session classes, improving their skills for college entrance exams, attending career days at UC Davis Medical Center and the Sacramento Municipal Court, and visiting the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland. According to Upward Bound Director Ping Chan of Student Affairs, the purpose of the yearlong program is to motivate low-income and other students living in Sacramento, Stockton and Vallejo to complete high school and pursue a college degree.
