This term, some of UC Davis' most experienced and prestigious scientists will share insights acquired during their combined 400 years in science and academia. Retired faculty members will reveal to biology undergraduates in a winter seminar course how to recognize key research breakthroughs, select significant research goals, and cope with career stress and ethical dilemmas. "During a career, you are confronted by a succession of complicated professional decisions, many of which will be compounded by personal considerations," says seminar host Carl Schmid, professor and chair of molecular and cellular biology. "Unfortunately, the 'best' choice will usually be a matter of judgment, and there will be no single 'right' answer to many of the most important questions. However, experience is often a good teacher and the experiences of the emeriti faculty speakers might provide valuable guidance." Students will hear from a different speaker each Friday afternoon, including four members of the National Academy of Sciences as well as a chancellor emeritus. Schmid hopes this class will be a model for other departments.
