Bruce Herbold -- UC Davis alumnus (Ph.D '87) and fish biologist for the Environmental Protection Agency, (415) 744-1992.Charged with protecting the threatened delta smelt and endangered winter chinook salmon, Herbold has led the EPA effort to develop critical estuarine habitat standards. As a UC Davis graduate student in the drought years of the mid-1980s, Herbold witnessed a profound drop in the number of smelt, spurring him and UC Davis professor Peter Moyle to pursue federal protection for the species.
