Seven Judges to Speak at Symposium on Federal Courts

Chief Judge Procter Hug of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals and six other judges will be among the panelists at a March 24 conference at UC Davis on the future of the federal appellate courts. "Managing the Federal Courts: Will the 9th Circuit be a Model for Change?" will explore the future of the federal courts of appeals; the White Commission's recommendations for restructuring the 9th Circuit; and the 9th Circuit's innovations for dealing with its growth, increasing caseload and longstanding vacancies. Other judges participating in the sessions include Pamela Ann Rymer of the 9th Circuit and Gilbert Merritt of the 6th Circuit, both members of the White Commission; James Browning, David Thompson and Clifford Wallace, all of the 9th Circuit; and Chief Judge Edward Becker of the 3rd Circuit. Additional panelists include Clerk Cathy Catterson of the 9th Circuit, Solicitor General Scott Bales of Arizona and Assistant U.S. Attorney Miriam Krinsky of Washington, D.C. Among the academics speaking will be Professor John Oakley of the UC Davis School of Law, an adviser and consultant to the White Commission, and Director Margaret Johns of the school's Civil Rights Clinic, who testified at the commission's San Francisco hearing and submitted written comments. The symposium, sponsored by the law school and the UC Davis Law Review, will begin at 9:15 a.m. in the Moot Court Room, King Hall. The event is free, but registration is required by Monday, March 20.
