Showing of Documentary on Alice Walker Scheduled

An award-winning documentary on Pulitzer Prize-winning author Alice Walker will be shown at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, in Room 26 of Wellman Hall at the University of California, Davis. Admission is free and open to the public. "Visions of the Spirit: A Portrait of Alice Walker," produced and directed by Elena Featherstone, provides an intimate and inspiring portrait of Walker by exploring the compassion, insight and strength that have brought her widespread admiration in the United States. The documentary examines, in Walker's words, "why I think and believe as I do." Walker's Southern black feminist consciousness is explored through conversations with the writer and members of her family. Interviews with black feminist literary scholar Barbara Christian place Walker in the history of African American literature, and archival footage of the civil rights movement provides background for Walker's political vision. The film, which took three years to make, was shot in several locations, including Walker's California home, her Georgia hometown and on location with the film crew of "The Color Purple," based on her novel of the same name. Featherstone coordinated the 1986 San Francisco Film Festival Black Symposium and founded the Woman Earth Feminist Peace Institute. The program is co-sponsored by the Sisterhood, Delta Sigma Theta and the Women's Resources and Research Center. For more information, call (916) 752-3372.
