Sierra Research Center to Host Annual Field Day

The four major groups representing the nation's beef producers should merge to better address consumer needs, take advantage of international marketing opportunities and become more cost-effective, says a recent industry task force. The findings of the Beef Industry Long Range Plan Task Force will be delivered by cattleman and former state Resources Secretary Gordon Van Vleck during the annual Beef and Range Field Day April 28 at UC's Sierra Foothill Research and Extension Center. "The field day is an opportunity for scientists, cattle ranchers, land owners and others to gather at this 'outdoor laboratory' to get a first-hand look at applied research on livestock and natural resource issues," says Jim Oltjen, a UC Davis animal management specialist involved in the program. In addition to the task force report, UC scientists will discuss animal health issues, biological control of yellow starthistle, the use of clovers for weed control, and cattle-handling techniques. The 5,000-acre Sierra Foothill Research and Extension Center is located off Highway 20 about midway between Grass Valley and Yuba City. For directions, contact the center at (916) 639-2501.
