Source On U.S.-Mexican Immigration Issues

The following UC Davis faculty member is available to comment on the history and legal issues behind immigration concerns that U.S. President George W. Bush and Mexican President Vicente Fox are discussing today. MEXICAN IMMIGRATION -- Professor Kevin Johnson of the School of Law has extensively studied U.S.-Mexico relations from the time of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848 to the present, including issues surrounding the North American Free Trade Agreement. While immigration issues are his main expertise, Johnson also has studied Mexico President Vicente Fox's rise to power and his call for open borders and a temporary worker program. Also associate dean for academic affairs at the law school, Johnson teaches and publishes on civil rights and is a professor and director of the Chicana/o studies program. He is a member of the American Bar Association's Coordinating Committee on Immigration, a director of the Legal Services of Northern California and a member of the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights for the San Francisco Bay Area.
