An electronic literary review created for the Internet has been launched by the UC Davis English department. Called "Spark," it will highlight the fiction and poetry of graduate students in the department's creative writing masters' degree program. The first issue on-line also includes poetry by Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and faculty member Gary Snyder. In addition to fiction and poetry, "Spark" will include graphic art and photography. The review is edited by Rod Bauer, a graduate student in fiction writing. The time is right for an Internet-based literary review, says Jack Hicks, director of the UC Davis creative writing program. "The initiation of "Spark" reflects the growing interest in the arts and literature on the Web. Anyone interested in contemporary fiction and poetry, and anyone interested particularly in the creative writing program at UC Davis, can see what is being written by students here." While UC Davis has had literary reviews in the past, Bauer says, "Spark" is a "bit unusual because it is being done on-line." The literary review can be found on the Web at http://wwwenglish.ucdavis.edu/spark/.
