Spirit Jumps and Shouts in Cheerleading Camps

This summer spirit is running high at UC Davis. Nearly 2,000 junior and senior high school cheerleading and pompon team members from schools throughout Northern California are learning to improve their skills at a series of spirit camps that ends Aug. 23. Experts from national cheerleading associations teach the participants techniques that improve the synchronization and sophistication of their performances. Cheerleading camps are gaining in popularity among spirit squads because they're a good buy, according to Paul Moore, vice president of administration for Universal Cheerleading Association. "It costs participants about $200 for a four-day camp, including room and board," says Moore. "If schools retained the services of professional choreographers, it would cost a lot more." Camp instructors teach students safe and controlled maneuvers based on each team's experience and talent. The next camp at UC Davis begins on Friday, July 30, at Recreation Hall.
