Stanford Prof Says U.S. Dominance Distorted Psychology

* Nov. 20, Thursday -- In her talk, "Psychology: Made in the USA," social psychologist Hazel Rose Markus of Stanford University will discuss cultural differences in psychology. She says the strong role played by U.S. researchers in the early history of psychology led to a distorted view of what is "universally true" vs. what is culturally conditioned in people. Markus has devoted the past 15 years to examining U.S.-Japanese differences in human behavior, motives and emotions. She has found that many U.S. behaviors are reversed in Japan. The Trzesniewski Distinguished Lecture is planned for 12:10 p.m. in the University Club lounge, UC Davis campus.
