From the creation of the teddy bear to the production of unusual lobsters, lizards and snails, the Margarete Steiff Toy Co. of Germany has created stuffed toy animals for more than 100 years. A life-sized zebra, tiger and giraffe, and a Noah's Ark from the 1950s with a parade of rhinos, pigs, kangaroos and other animals are a few of the more than 200 creations to be exhibited at the Design Gallery.
From major Northern California collections, Lisa Dare, guest curator, has selected a variety of animals from 1904 to the present. Steiff animals of various sizes will be exhibited, ranging from miniature woolen birds a few inches tall to life-sized stuffed animals first designed in 1897. The smaller animals tend to be whimsical, while the life-sized ones are more dramatic.
"The exhibition is sure to be an exciting and educational adventure into childhood memories for both children and adults," said Robert Frye, Design Gallery director.
Presentations by Lisa Vought, dealer and expert collector, and Jim Holland, Steiff representative, are planned for the Nov. 13 symposium, for which a nominal fee will be charged. The event will include a collectors' round-table discussion, trade or sale mart and exhibition tour.
The gallery exhibition is free and open to the public.
