Student Cartoonist Charts Humor on Campus

The difficulties and delights of being a college student in the 1990s are being played out in a comic strip written and drawn by UC Davis sophomore student Willow Cook. "Stampede" appears daily in The California Aggie, giving readers a slice of campus life. "Sometimes I get ideas about what to draw from things I heard about when I lived in the dorms last year or from things that happen to me. I try to be true to my own experience," Cook says. Cook also finds that writing about what she has encountered provides her with plenty of material for the strip. The student artist says she designs her comics to encapsulate not only her, but all college students' frustrations, which is probably why U Magazine, a monthly supplement to many other college newspapers across the country, is including her comic strips in its pages. "Being a college student at a big university sometimes makes me feel like I'm being trampled -- which is why the strip is called 'Stampede,'" Cook says.
