The best part about being named college photographer of the year by the National Photographers Press Foundation and the University of Missouri School of Journalism is getting a three-month paid internship with the National Geographic Society, says winner Ian Martin, a junior at UC Davis. Capping an impressive career as a student photojournalist, Martin has won a $1,000 scholarship, 100 rolls of film and a new Canon camera. Martin says he feels super because it's the most cherished award a college photographer can receive. Martin was the top choice recently among 270 college photographers that submitted portfolios in the national contest. "My immediate future has me shooting for the Virginian Pilot and Ledger-Star newspapers this summer and then working for National Geographic in the fall," says Martin. "After I graduate with a degree in English my hope is to work for a major daily newspaper as a photojournalist."
