Student-raised Horses to be Sold at Campus Auction

What: Eight weanling and yearling horses will be sold in the annual UC Davis public horse auction, coordinated by students in the equine management program of the animal science department. Included in this pleasure-horse sale will be Arabians, quarter horses, thoroughbreds and thoroughbred/quarter horse crosses, ranging from 4 months to 1 year old. In past years, the young horses have sold for anywhere from $250 to $1,500. The auction is planned by the same students who have been in charge of the breeding, delivery, training and overall health care for the horses. Some of the students are preparing for careers in the horse industry, while others are planning on further studies in veterinary or graduate school. When: Saturday, June 22 1 p.m. -- viewing of horses in the barns 4 p.m. -- barbecue 5:30 p.m. -- auction in the arena Where: Horse barns and arena Cole Facility, La Rue Road UC Davis Visuals: Students grooming horses in barns in preparation for the sale, auction participants during barbecue, horses being shown prior to sale and the professional auctioneer at work. Directions Take Interstate 80 to the UC Davis exit and turn north onto Old and Parking: Davis Road. At the stop sign go straight, crossing the creek and turning left onto La Rue Road. The Cole Facility barns and arena will be on the left. Free weekend parking is available in Lot 46, directly across from the arena on La Rue Road.
