Student-Run Health Clinic Offers Care for More Than 20 Years

Before the sun rises every Saturday a line of people begins to form in downtown Sacramento at the Clinica Tepati -- a free medical clinic that UC Davis students and physicians operate. For the past 20 years, patients who are often homeless, primarily Hispanic and all without medical insurance have been receiving care from the clinic's volunteer staff. More than 100 UC Davis medical students and undergraduates provide treatment and education. Patients can receive physical examinations and vaccinations, treatment for short-term and chronic illness like hypertension and diabetes, and gynecological and obstetric care. In addition to assisting the community, the clinic provides hands-on learning opportunities for the students: for pre-med undergraduates who take the vital signs of patients and discuss their medical histories and problems, and for the medical students who treat the patients under supervision by a physician. Funded through private donations and state grants, Clinica Tepati is one of the first student-run, nonprofit health clinics in California.
