Teams of students at UC Davis each year pull together and pull off an amazing variety of community service projects that touch the lives of thousands. They feed the homeless, organize cross-cultural outreach programs, set up educational health fairs, and build homes for others who need assistance. Many of these efforts were applauded this month when Saturn Corp. honored 32 student groups at UC Davis as part of a national award program that recognizes teamwork, a hallmark of the company's philosophy. "The number of student applications for the award program alone is testimony to the enthusiasm, commitment and energy of our students," says Rosanne Mandel, a program coordinator with the campus Student Leadership Center. This year's campus award went to the 14-member student team that organized Picnic Day this year, a nine-hour, 150-event campus open house run by 500 volunteers and attended by tens of thousands. Saturn also recognized five other campus groups for their efforts in organizing the revival of the campus yearbook, an Asian Pacific culture week, the construction of an electric car, homeless outreach and improvement of engineering graphics in classes.
