For the first time students are working with the UC Davis Police Department to alert fellow students to possible campus crime. Beginning Monday, Oct. 10, student government leaders will host a crime safety week intended to raise the awareness of the potential for crime. "A major component of the weeklong program will be to educate the campus community on sexual violence," says Melissa Diehl, student body vice president and director of the special fall safety event. UC Davis has an aggressive public-safety program that includes late-night escorts, emergency phones and pro-active police officers, says Diehl. In addition, the UC Davis Rape Prevention Education Program provides sexual assault services and crisis intervention as well as educational programs. Last year, representatives spoke to more than 360 women on issues related to sexual violence, personal safety, dating violence, stalking and harassment, according to Jennifer Beeman, coordinator of the program. Next month's safety-awareness program includes self-defense demonstrations, police dog security drills and crime prevention tips.
