They plotted their parentage, hovered over their birthing, and groomed and doctored them. Now UC Davis animal science students will place their equine "babies" on the auction block during the campus's annual public horse sale, to be held Saturday, June 21.Included in this pleasure-horse sale will be 10 quarter horses, Arabs and Anglo-Arabs ranging in age from 5 months to 1 year. Bids, starting at $250, have in past years reached as high as $2,500."We're expecting 80 to 100 people, mostly from Sacramento, Yolo and Solano counties," says Lisa Goodrich, a senior in animal science who helped manage the care and training of the foals. "These are primarily non-competitive horse people looking for sound horses that they can train for pleasure riding," she says. The sale is the culmination of a six-month equine management internship program in the animal science department. Through the internships, students receive hands-on training related to horse breeding and management. Many of the interns will pursue careers in the horse industry or further studies in veterinary or graduate school. Proceeds from the auction will help offset the costs of the internship program.Sale events, including a 2 p.m. viewing, 4:30 p.m. barbecue dinner, and 6 p.m. riding demonstration and auction, will be held at the Cole Facility barns and arena on La Rue Road.
