Students to Compete in International Car Contest

Graduate and undergraduate engineering students at UC Davis have worked all year in preparing a hybrid vehicle -- designed to run on both electricity and gasoline -- for international competition in June. The vehicle will attempt to better the students' second-place finish in last year's competition. "Our new vehicle is demonstrating in road tests that the hybrid concept is fuel efficient and clean running," says Greg Reimers, graduate student in engineering and project leader. "We hope that this vehicle will prove to automotive engineers that students with very little money can build a practical car that meets most people's needs." The mechanical engineering students' entry is capable of speeds up to 100 mph and can travel more than 1,000 miles on a combination of electricity and gasoline before refueling or recharging. The competition, held in Detroit June 14-20, is sponsored by Saturn Corp., National Resources of Canada, the U.S. Department of Energy and the Society of Automotive Engineers.
