What continues to be particularly "hot" on the UC Davis campus these days is the opportunity for students to get away from the rigors of everyday academic life and tackle an assignment in the corporate world. For many students, getting a job after college depends on the work experience internships provide. One such internship, sponsored by General Motors, is allowing seven UC Davis students to experience what it is like to operate as a real marketing agency. Starting last fall the students managed a budget of several thousand dollars to conduct market research and analysis and to design a promotional campaign. In addition, they were required to write a "comprehensive plans book" and communicate their results to a local automobile dealer. "Executing our promotion next month will be the final phase of our two-quarter project," says Alok Vasudeva, an economics major and team member. "After months of planning and preparation, it is finally time to make our ideas come to life." The UC Davis team is planning to showcase their promotional event at the Woodland County Fair Mall, Friday, Feb. 17, through Sunday, Feb. 19. "College students are excellent in determining what is acceptable and 'cool' in the marketplace and this internship allows students to not only become creative but analytical as well," says Bayford Butler, student faculty sponsor and lecturer in the agricultural economics department.
