For 17 years students at UC Davis have been dancing ambassadors for Mexican culture. Danzantes del Alma, a Mexican folkloric dance troupe on campus, will be presenting its latest performance at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 23, in Freeborn Hall. It will highlight the history of Mexican dance and culture with a mixture of native, traditional and contemporary rhythms. Danzantes regularly performs in Sacramento, Yolo and Solano counties at community events. The shows promote ethnic dancing and the students publicize the value of higher education, according to dance troupe member Richard Flores. "Most students who join the dance club have limited or no folklorico dance experience, but after exposure to the fast-paced footwork required for Mexican dancing, they become enthusiastic and proficient dancers," says Flores.
