Financing their education will be a little easier for many UC Davis students in the future, thanks to a recently launched, campuswide fund-raising effort. Called "Students First," the campaign will raise more than $15 million over two years to fund scholarships, fellowships, student-related academic programs, and other financial aid for undergraduate and graduate students. "This campaign comes at a time when the state's economic woes mean financial instability for many families and for the university system as well," says UC Davis Chancellor Larry Vanderhoef. "Through this fund-raising program, we intend to bridge the gap between fees and available financial aid." Students are being pushed into debt in record numbers, with UC Davis undergraduates now owing an average of $10,000 by graduation, and two to three times that amount typical for graduate and professional students. Believed to be unique among all UC campuses, the campaign will aim at a balance of cash gifts for immediate support and endowment funding to assure long-range financial resources.
