Searching for summer jobs, UC Davis students have been filling the campus student employment center with an eye for positions that pay well and are interesting. "A high percentage of our students find summer jobs in Northern California," says Pat Gutierrez, manager of the employment center. Among UC Davis students, some of the more popular summer jobs are working at casinos in the Lake Tahoe area as blackjack dealers, bartenders and waitresses. The money is good and the tips are rewarding, says Gutierrez. Several thousand summer jobs are advertised at the center during the spring months. "Our students are very popular choices among the employers, because they're bright and they can work well into September, whereas college students from other schools operating on a semester system must return for fall classes in late August," says Guiterrez. The hourly range in pay is from minimum wage to $12. The jobs that pay higher wages are usually for movers, laborers and promotional modeling services.
