Students Head to National Concrete-Canoe Competition

Some talented UC Davis engineering students are spending the first part of their summer making concrete float. The campus's team won the regional competition of the National Concrete Canoe Competition and now is headed to the finals in Golden, Colo. With the canoe loaded in a rented truck, the team will leave Davis late this month for the June 24-26 finals. This is the first time UC Davis has qualified for the national competition. "Every year, we've had strong entries with one weak aspect. This year, we finally brought it all together," said team co-captain Christine Reistetter. The Aggies' concrete canoe, named Ag-gregate, is 20 feet long, weighs 115 pounds and is mostly concrete, with some reinforcing Fiberglas mesh and steel mesh, Reistetter said. The team motto: Got concrete? Competition entries are awarded points based on several criteria: racing performance; how well the canoe holds up at the competition's finish; a five-minute presentation about the canoe engineering; a 12-page technical paper; and an informational display. The contest is organized by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and sponsored by Master Builders, Inc., of Cleveland, Ohio, which develops and manufactures chemical mixtures for concrete.
