Students Organize Daylong Forum on Affirmative Action

Student leaders at UC Davis are planning a daylong educational forum to discuss one of the most controversial issues of the year -- affirmative action. It will take place on the campus Quad starting at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 12. This past summer the UC Board of Regents voted to end the use of race, ethnicity and gender in student admissions, hiring and contracting. The forum, organized by the student government group, ASUCD, will feature UC Regent Roy Brophy, who will offer his perspective on the decision. The morning session, 10 a.m. to noon, will offer a series of structured presentations led by experts on the topic of affirmative action. In the afternoon, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., the focus will be on student-led discussion groups. "We hope that this forum will allow for both points of view on the issue of affirmative action," says Peter Nguyen, student body president. "Other topics the students are planning to discuss in the afternoon include regental reform, the California Civil Rights Initiative and how the demographic makeup of the university will change due to the decision." Nguyen says that UC Davis will be joining all other UC campuses this day in discussing these issues. A separate noon rally is scheduled for the Quad as well.
