What: UC Davis undergraduate engineering students will demonstrate their rugby-playing "robot" before taking it to Osaka, Japan, for an international competition. They will be the sole team from the United States. The robotic vehicle must navigate an obstacle course without human assistance, place a rugby ball on a tee and kick the ball between the field post. Then the machine, with human direction, will kick 17 rugby balls through one of three goal posts.
Students began work on the project last spring, as part of a course taught by Kazuo Yamazaki, professor of mechanical and aeronautical engineering at UC Davis. They hope their trip promotes interest in mechatronics, which integrates mechanical and electrical engineering.
Eighteen university teams will be participating in Robocon '95. The students leave for Japan on Wednesday, Aug. 30, and the competition will take place on Sept. 3.
When: Monday, Aug. 28
10 a.m.
Where: Student Engineering, Bainer Hall
UC Davis
(See map on reverse side)
Visuals: The demonstration will take place in the lab where the robot was constructed, and the 10 team members will be available to answer questions. Students will show the robot kicking the rugby balls through a goal and demonstrate the robot's motor abilities.
