Students Throw a Picnic for Thousands

Tens of thousands of people will come to the University of California, Davis, on Saturday, April 18, for its 85th annual Picnic Day, one of the largest picnics and student-run events in the country. The daylong open house will begin at 9:30 a.m. with opening ceremonies on the north end of the Quad, followed by a traditional parade through the campus and downtown Davis. Other features will include musical entertainment, dancing, departmental exhibits, sporting events, campus tours, a student organization fair and animal exhibitions. The four co-marshals of the parade will be Rep. Vic Fazio, D-West Sacramento, elected to nine terms; alumna Yvonne Lee, a member of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights and co-producer of an Emmy award-winning documentary on Chinese immigration history; Deanne Vochatzer, head women's track coach at UC Davis and coach of the U.S. women's 1996 Olympic track and field team; and Celeste Turner Wright, professor emerita of English and the first woman to receive tenure at UC Davis. Highlights include: * Parade -- 10 a.m., intersection of North Quad and West Quad * Police dog agility demonstrations, dachshund races and other dog events -- 11:30 a.m., Orchard Intramural Field * Chemistry Magic Show -- 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., front porch of 194 Chemistry Building * Battle of the Bands -- 2 p.m., lawn at Lake Spafford * Intercollegiate athletic competitions and sporting exhibitions including baseball, track, tennis, water polo, and soccer -- 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., all athletic fields and Hickey Gym Dancing, faculty lectures and a body-building exhibition are also planned. Food concessions will be open, but no alcohol is allowed. This year's Picnic Day was organized by a 13-member student board of directors chaired by Jennifer Emi.
