The environmental document for a proposed activities and recreation center, recreation field and minor alterations to Hickey Gym at the University of California, Davis, has been completed and is available for public review and comment.
Copies of the Draft Tiered Initial Study and Mitigated Negative Declaration may be obtained from the reserve reading room of UC Davis' Shields Library, the Davis branch of the Yolo County Library and the Fairfield-Suisun Community Library in Fairfield.
The public notice for the project is available as a PDF file on the World Wide Web at .
Written comments may be submitted through 5 p.m. on Nov. 27 to the Office of Resource Management and Planning at the university.
The proposed activities and recreation center, with 105,710 assignable square feet, would house student clubs and organizations, various court sports, indoor jogging, fitness activities, showers and lockers, food services, social activities and a climbing wall.
It would accommodate student organizations and activities currently housed in the Recreation Hall and Memorial Union and those currently overcrowded or housed temporarily in various campus buildings.
Plans call for the center to be constructed on 5.5 acres immediately north of the existing Recreation Hall with an enclosed, second-story bridge between the two buildings.
A 1.7-acre recreation field is being proposed for the southwest corner of the intersection of La Rue Road and Hutchison Drive to replace the field displaced by the proposed activities and recreation center.
The minor alterations to Hickey Gymnasium would be made to accommodate the gymnastics program. Pits would be installed in the floor of the lower gymnasium to relocate gym equipment, and a porch on the northeast corner of the gymnasium would be enclosed to allow for a longer vault runway.
