Summer School Reports Record Enrollment

One way UC Davis students are trying to beat higher fees and the prospect of canceled classes this fall is to enroll in summer school. A record number -- more than 4,200 students -- have enrolled in the first of two sessions offered during the 12-week period that started last Monday. "This is the last time students can take up to 12 course units per session for a fee of $389," says Dan Wick, director of summer sessions. "Next summer students wishing to attend summer school will be charged by the unit as opposed to a flat fee." Summer school, says Wick, represents a major savings for financially strapped students who have seen their fees increase for three consecutive years. Fee increases are among several steps taken by the University of California to deal with reductions in state funding. More than 240 classes are being offered this summer at UC Davis and many have been filled.
