California's electricity blackouts and rising energy costs should be a wake-up call for people complacent about the viability of their world, according to a UC Davis professor and author on sustainability.
Richard Dorf, a professor in the Graduate School of Management and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, has written "Technology, Humans, and Society: Toward a Sustainable World." He will speak Tuesday at the Sustainable Business Institute's annual CEO Forum in Redwood City, Calif.
Dorf calls on business people, scientists, engineers, lawmakers, government regulators, environmentalists and citizens to work toward a society modeled on environmental quality, economic health and social equity.
Businesses, the author says, must go beyond the bottom line -- even beyond being "green" or "socially responsible."
"Business strategy should include a plan for contributing to a sustainable world," Dorf says. He defines the essence of sustainability as the ability to maintain and support future generations without compromising their quality of life.
Dorf's book, published by Academic Press and with nearly 50 contributors, explores natural resources and the environment, technology, business and economics, agriculture, transportation, architecture and quality of life measures, among other topics.
