Sustainable Ag Coalition Receives $2 Million

To help move California toward more sustainable food and agricultural systems, a coalition of California nonprofit organizations and the University of California has received a three-year, $2 million grant from the Kellogg Foundation. The UC Davis-based UC Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program is one of two UC programs involved in the new coalition, called the California Alliance for Sustainable Agriculture. "By 'sustainable,' we mean more environmentally sound, economically viable and socially just farming, marketing and public-policy practices," says David Campbell, SAREP economic and public-policy analyst and a UC Davis political science lecturer. "The huge task of making changes in agriculture policy and practice will only happen if diverse groups find ways to work together," he says. Coalition activities will include community roundtable discussions, "lighthouse" farm observations, building community coalitions to support sustainable agriculture, and leadership training.
