Sustainable Ag Program Invites Grant Proposals

A statewide UC program established to help farmers meet futureenvironmental and economic challenges is offering approximately$150,000 for graduate student research projects and educational events related to sustainable agriculture. "California agriculture is overwhelmed with challenges related to water quality, declining soil productivity, urban encroachment, labor and finding substitutes for previously used chemical tools," says Bill Liebhardt, director of the UC Davis-based Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program. The program has funded 130 projects for more than $2.5 million since 1987. Grants for new and continuing research and education projects must be applied for by Sept. 7, 1994. Request for Proposal forms may be obtained from the SAREP office at (916) 752-7556.
