What: The conditions under which hate crimes occur and hate-crime laws are adopted will be explored at a symposium at UC Davis.
When: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 26
Where: Room 273 of the Social Sciences and Humanities Building, UC Davis
Background: Speakers will include:
* Gary Segura of the political science department at Claremont Graduate University on obstacles to the academic investigation of hate crimes among Latinos;
* Gregory Herek, a research psychologist at UC Davis, on hate crimes against lesbians and gay men; and
* Ryken Grattet, an assistant professor of sociology at UC Davis, on the politics of bias crime and public policy.
After each makes a 20-minute presentation, there will be a question-and-answer period.
The symposium is being organized by the Davis Humanities Institute's cluster on minority politics.
Directions: From Interstate 80, exit at Richards Boulevard, proceed north through the tunnel, cross First Street and continue on E Street. At Fifth Street or Russell Boulevard, turn left. At Howard Way, turn left and proceed to the parking garage. Reporters in unmarked vehicles should place a business card on the dashboard of their car. The Social Sciences and Humanities Building is east of the UC Davis Bookstore and from the parking garage is a short walk to the southeast.
