Symposium to Highlight Wildlife Health Issues

A variety of health problems affecting wildlife in California and elsewhere in the nation will be discussed during a symposium to be held Saturday, Jan. 23, at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. The Wildlife Medicine Symposium, presented by the vet school's Wildlife and Aquatic Animal Medicine Club, will be in 170 Schalm Hall of the UC Davis Medical Sciences Complex. The symposium is open at no cost to the public. Approximately 200 students and faculty from veterinary medicine and related disciplines, as well as local veterinarians, biologists and wildlife rehabilitators, are expected to attend. Featured speakers will represent the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, International Bird Rescue and Rehabilitation, the U.S. Navy, and the Wyoming Department of Fish and Game. Topics will include marine mammal health issues, bird diseases, brucellosis in elk and seabird infections. The symposium also will include a forum addressing the pros and cons of rehabilitation efforts for wildlife injured during oil spills and for wildlife in general. Moderating the forum will be Dr. Jonna Mazet, director of the Wildlife Health Center at UC Davis.
