"Forces of Gravity" features works by fiber artist Consuelo Jimenez Underwood, an assistant professor in the Department of Art and Design at San Jose State University. Underwood weaves subtle and delicate, yet rich tapestries containing an abundance of veiled messages. Several of her works are burial shrouds, woven to honor Underwood's personal heroes, including Joan of Arc and Emiliano Zapata, who, "by challenging the social mores of their time ... effected positive changes in our society," Underwood said.
Underwood's pieces frequently deal with the convergence of the metaphysical and spiritual world with the material and visual world. She also uses ancient legends and contemporary icons to reflect her Chicano cultural background.
Underwood received her bachelor's degree in fine art from San Diego State University and her master's degree in fine art from San Jose State University. She has exhibited at the Meridian Gallery in San Francisco, the Sunnyvale Arts Center, the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art and the San Jose Museum of Art. In 1987, she received an Emerging Talent Award from the American Craft Council.
